Book Review: Keepers of the Deep

Image
Keepers of The Deep by R.C. Heydn My rating: 3 of 5 stars Nikko has heard the stories about the strange, child snatching bird, but when he becomes one of Torpah’s victims he is plunged into a world he never knew existed. This world is populated entirely by children, with a conflict between the Leaf Children and the Drongs escalating to a dangerous point. Can Nikko help rescue the kidnapped Leafie leader from the dangerous Drongs in their mysterious tunnel dwelling? Or will he become another victim of the tunnel’s secrets? Keepers of the Deep was a fascinating journey both into a little boy’s imagination and an alternate fantasy reality that does keep you guessing right up to the very end. I really enjoyed the story and the Lord of the Flies type characters, with a little supernatural twist here and there. Unfortunately, all the typos were really distracting, particularly the wrong words. It was clear what the author intended to write and that it was just a mispell or autocorre...

Book Review: Ryyah Threat from the North

Image
World of Ryyah: Threat from the North: Book Three by H.L. Watson My rating: 4 of 5 stars Addlin is not sure what just happened at his meeting between his House of Donovan and the Eastern Elves alliance discussions, but he may have just married. Seliene knew that she would become bonded as part an alliance, but she wasn’t prepared for a half human bond mate who may not be affected by the bonding spell in the same way she is. Addlin must learn to navigate marriage to an elf who wasn’t sure how his culture works, while also navigating the murky world of alliances during war. While started a bit slow for me, this book quickly morphed into a fascinating tale of Elven culture and war. I honestly wished that the concepts of bonding and Elven culture were explored further, although that is not to diminish the character development that was deepened in a meaningful way. The ideas just fascinated me so I would love to see more of Addlin and Seliene’s relationship played out in the rest of...

Book Review: Jamyria: The Entering

Image
Jamyria: The Entering by Madeline Meekins My rating: 4 of 5 stars Margo is tired of the stares, the silence, the awkwardness. She can’t change the past and she can’t change how teenagers act. But she never thought that stomping away from an awkward teenage encounter would land her falling through a globe into another world that she might be called to save. Jamyria: The Entering is a riveting fantasy tale of a teenage girl who begins down the path of destiny. It is very well written, interspersing Margo’s life in the fantasy world Jamyria with flashbacks of her history that colors her actions in Jamyria. I really enjoyed this first installment of the story, and can’t wait to see how Margo’s story plays out. She is a realistic yet fascinating character, and I love the intertwining of the “real” world and fantasy - kind of a Narnia nod. I’m looking forward to the next book! Book Review: Mars at Midnight

Image
Mars at Midnight: A Detective Ace Sloan Mystery by William Graham My rating: 2 of 5 stars Detective “Ace” Sloan is investigating a strange murder on Mars. Who would leave a beautiful young woman to die in frigid red sand? Along with new partner, Kate Hammer, Sloan will uncover a strange Martian serial killer, and tangle with politics, education and class warfare along the way. While an interesting premise, I found the writing a bit shallow. A populated, colonized Mars beginning to deal with problems like housing, immigration issues and crime is a really catchy story, but the characters were stereotypical and the plot left little to no suspense. Still if you want an interesting, fast read it’s a good one to download. View all my reviews Please note, while there may be affiliate links or payment for reviews, all opinions are my own. You can't buy a good review from me, people. I am way too mouthy for that.

Book Review: Chains of Mist

Image
Chains of Mist by T.C. Metivier My rating: 4 of 5 stars Ortega is determined to fulfill his mission - kill Rokan Sellas. He made the mistake of thinking he was dead once before, but this time would be sure. Even though he has to track him to one of the most dangerous planets trailing only two of his best men, he will put a sword through Rokan Sellas. What he has not stopped to consider is whether or not that can actually kill him. Chains of Mist is the second in the Chalas Peruvas series, and it does not disappoint. There are familiar characters and new faces but the journey continues with lots of twists and turns. This is turning out to be a solid series full of intergalactic travel, magic, prophecy, camaraderie and family. The writing is on point and the characters are well developed without resorting to extreme plot devices or blocky narration. I’m really enjoying the story and looking forward to the revelations to come. View all my reviews Please note, while there may ...
