Book Review: Summa 21

Image
Author Ronald Cooke presents the idea of Summa 21 as an updated Christian theology for the 21st century, attempting to reconcile 21st century knowledge, particularly scientific knowledge, with the faith of Christian theology. In this way he hopes to make it both accessible and acceptable to Millenials and generations beyond, as well as provide a framework to integrate new knowledge and discovery without marginalizing the Bible and its teachings. I love the idea of Summa 21, particularly as it relates to acknowledging that science is important, indeed a gift given by God, and that scientists need to also acknowledge that the spiritual world is both real and relevant to their work. I feel that this has been missing and even purposely ignored in a lot of modern science, when really it isn’t a threat but a complement. I have to say I’m not on board with absolutely everything that Cooke presents, particularly about the nature of Jesus and the role of hell,  but I love that he is...

Book Review: A Descendant of Adam or Progeny of Apes

A Descendant of Adam or Progeny of Apes -Which Are You? by David L Cole My rating: 3 of 5 stars Creation vs. Evolution has been a hot topic for a long time, and recently come to the forefront again with the debate between Bill Nye and Ken Ham . A Descendant of Adam takes the creationist position and argues against evolution. While some compelling evidence was presented, particularly the reproduced article on carbon dating by Dr. Kent Hovind, the rest of the ebooklet I thought was a little light on persuading facts. While I lean creationist myself, in trying to put myself in the position of an evolutionist I have to conclude I would not be compelled by most of the arguments presented. It is common knowledge that Piltdown Man was a hoax, but still the theory of evolution is taught and accepted. Particularly if you are not a Christian, it is not too important that people were executed for trying to translate the Latin Scripture into the vernacular, so why does that matter in the ar...

Why I Don't Celebrate Earth Day

I have to admit, the concept of celebrating Earth Day always struck me as sort of ridiculous. I have never been the hug-a-tree type, although I dont' go out of my way to litter or spray cans of aerosol into the air either. Recently, as I am wont to do, I've been trying to figure out what exactly it is that rubs me the wrong way about Earth Day and its various celebrations. While I really despise how everyone tries to shove it in your face and make you feel like some horrible person if you throw a piece of paper in the garbage rather than recycle or forget to turn out a light if you leave the room (and GOD-FORBID you forget to turn out a fluorescent rather than CFL!), and I really get annoyed by all the energy companies pretending to have a conscience apart from turning a profit, which dang it all is what I want to see in my for-profit companies, and it's not simply because I despise the obvious political agenda or valuing EVERYTHING above human life, I've discovered tha...
